I AM A MARATHON RUNNER!!

Today I turn 50, and am proud to say that I am a marathon runner! When I turned 48, I started to think about what I would be doing in 2 years; and for some reason, running a marathon popped into my head. Weird, I know. But I figure if I have to have a mid-life crisis, why not make it a healthy one? And what the heck, how about doing it as a fundraiser, too? So now I had two rather HUGE goals to reach before I turn 50.

The reason I chose Team Diabetes is not because I am diabetic, or even have any close family members with diabetes. However, as a nurse, I have seen the devastating effect that Diabetes has on people and their families. And with Type 2 Diabetes reaching almost epidemic proportions, I am so happy to support a cause that can have an impact on ending Diabetes though research, education and advocacy. Check out www.teamdiabetes.ca for more information. Plus the t-shirt is cool. In return for me raising funds, Team Diabetes sent me to the fabulous Disneyworld Marathon – what a deal!

I had done a “learn to run” clinic a few years ago, then some sprint triathlons and one Olympic distance triathlon. The furthest I had ever run at one time was 10 km. So I did the smartest thing, I signed up for a Running Room “Half Marathon” Clinic, and decided to run the Intact Edmonton half marathon as a “warm up” for Disneyworld. It was great – I learned so much, from pacing and rest days to hills and speed training. I also connected with others in the class – what a fabulous experience to cross the finish line holding hands with 2 other Running Room pals! And we continued to run together after the clinic finished. The rest of the group went on to train for a couple of other half marathons, while I stepped up my training for the full 42.2 km! But not alone – I joined a Running Room on-line clinic so I could continue the support and training. Again, a smart move. The weekly emails and the training plan kept me motivated and on track.

It was a bit hard doing the training runs on my own, but I managed. My plan included joining the group on Tuesdays and Wednesdays when I could, then doing my long run on Sunday. I would run to the Namao Centre Running Room (about 4 km), run with the group however far they were going, then continue on my own to complete my distance. I usually stopped for coffee before finishing though, and joked that I might be the only runner that needs a coffee break on my long runs.

I was a bit worried about the marathon – no coffee breaks. And training in Alberta during winter for a warm-weather destination was hard at times. But all the training paid off, especially those hills! When I finished my last “race pace” run before travelling I felt so ready to conquer the marathon, it was a huge boost to my confidence.

As it turned out, Florida was NOT a warm weather destination this January – Marathon weekend was a chilly 26 F/ -3 C. I had been hoping it wouldn’t get that cold, but as I have heard, hope is NOT a strategy. I should have been a bit more prepared and was really missing some of my cold weather running gear. But with a bit of creative layering and my thermal socks, I managed okay. Team Diabetes took some extra care of us, handing out ponchos and providing a tent for us to huddle in before the race started. There were icy patches at the water stations, and my hair froze into an icicle as I ran. But I completed my first marathon and boy did it feel great!

I want to share my inspiration with you – running a marathon is a great accomplishment. If I can run a marathon, I can do anything I choose to do! And if you are reading this, please believe that if I can do it, so can you. Some key points:
1. Set a goal and write it down – I set this goal almost 2 years ago, and started taking action a year ago. Without the goal, nothing would have happened. I could clearly visualize running through Disneyworld long before it became a reality.
2. Do your research – I did some research about how to train, how to raise funds, which fundraising groups were attending the marathon I wanted to run.
3. Make a plan – your plan should include steps you need to take to reach your goal and a timeline for achieving these steps. The Running Room training plan was invaluable. Don’t forget your “plan B” for when things don’t happen the way you expect (for me this included how to dress for sub-zero weather in Florida of all places)
4. Get support – my support included my family, the running room clinic and participants, Team Diabetes, friends and more. In fact I was overwhelmed with the support I received, even from total strangers!
5. DO IT – Take your action, follow through – Dreams and goals without action are nothing. Action included doing things I was uncomfortable with, including asking for money, running outdoors in winter for long distances, definitely many things that were outside my comfort zone.
6. Once your goal is achieved – CELEBRATE and BE PROUD! – you have done something special! My celebrations included a victory dinner, a massage, time with my family in Disneyworld. Many athletes were seen all over the parks wearing their medals and marathon t-shirts. Everywhere total strangers would congratulate me – it was amazing!

The next goal? I have several, but one is the Goofy Challenge with my daughter (she says I have inspired her). Half marathon Saturday, full marathon Sunday. The medal is AWESOME! As one athlete put it - pain is temporary, Goofy Pride is forever!

More About Running

I think I'm getting a bit obsessed with running:)

That's okay, I have a big goal so I need to focus on that and enjoy the ride as well! (It's my BHAG)

I ran my first half-marathon on August 16th, and it went really well - I felt great (other than some muscle soreness, understandable after 21.1 km - and yes, the .1 km is important!) Since then I have been taking it easy - funny how taking it easy involves a 13 km run, which I did today. It was an easy pace, anyway. I have continued to run, and next week I will start training for my full marathon in January at Disneyworld!

Now that I have done the half, somehow the full seems more real. Also, more daunting as I look at the training schedule - many weeks of 60+ km/wk. And winter is coming. I have never run outside in the winter, but I just can't picture running the track at the Y for the 32 km training run (that is 288 times around the tiny track). So it's time to learn about winter running. And the time commitment will be huge - there goes Sunday mornings for the rest of the year!

Oh, and the fundraising is really winding up, too. I am doing the marathon for Team Diabetes, and it's interesting how things are coming together. I am holding my pub night/silent auction on October 3rd and most people I have approached have been very helpful - whether to donate cash, items for my auction or door prizes, plan to attend with friends, or just the amazing encouragement. So many people's lives are touched with diabetes - I am so proud to be able to contribute to this cause!

If you would like to help, please email me at arlenetoys@shaw.ca, but don't feel you have to. Part of my goal is to raise awareness, so if you know one more thing about Team Diabetes now, I am happy:) (click here for lots more information: http://www.diabetes.ca/)

Create Memories with your family

I had a "remember when" kind of day today, I took my 16-year old daughter to the zoo! And it was her idea! We had so much fun seeing what's new, taking pictures (now on a digital camera), checking out the petting zoo, and especially remembering our past visits there. Some things have changed - the new lemur house and something like a guinea pig ranch; and some things have not - same old tigers. She even got to pet a rat:)

We probably hadn't been to the zoo for 8 or 10 years together, but it brought back all kinds of memories for both of us, the times we rode the paddle boats, the time she fed the elephants, the nocturnal exhibit, the time my son dropped his toy car into the gopher exhibit, and of course - ice cream! Then we got home and my 19 year old son reminded me of some other interesting memories (and how things in the zoo have changed over the years).

My children are fortunate that we have been able to spend time together doing fun things. That is what makes childhood special, and what creates lasting family bonds. Whether it's at the zoo, other local attractions, long trips, or even special family times at home, please make an effort to make those memories together. Games nights and family traditions are two great examples.

I am so blessed to have a teen who enjoy outings with her mom. At 16 she often prefers to text or chat on facebook, but today - no phones, no computer - just Mom, Rachel and the zoo. Simple times, and a new memory - fabulous!

Why I'm running a marathon

It was my 48th birthday, I was running around the tiny track at the YMCA, with not much on my mind. Suddenly it pops into my head that in 2 years I will be 50 - half a century - wow! Couldn't really believe that, but another thought pops in - I should run a marathon to celebrate turning 50! Why that came to mind I'm not sure. I had seen a poster at the Y for Team Diabetes, and a while earlier had read about someone who did their first marathon at Disneyworld. It actually sounded FUN! I put the two together and thought - I could run a marathon at Disneyworld, support a charitable cause, and still celebrate turning 50 - AWESOME!

That was before I thought it through. But once I told some friends, I found I was quite committed. Started calling it my mid-life crisis. I figure it's a pretty good crisis to have. I found out more about the charitable cause, checked out a couple of different groups, settled on Team Diabetes. I have to raise $4700 in donations, but almost all that money goes towards Diabetes research, care and advocacy. They send me to the marathon, but because of corporate sponsors, can send me there and still have lots left to support their programs. Sounds great.

A bit about Diabetes. This is almost an epidemic in North America. More than 2 million Canadians are living with diabetes - between Type 1 (usually starts in childhood), gestational (occurs during pregnancy but puts the woman at higher risk for developing Type 2 later), and Type 2 (usually happens in adulthood and can be related to lifestyle). Having diabetes means your pancreas isn't working properly. However, that can lead to many other health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, eye problems, and nerve damage. These complications have a huge impact on quality and length of life. For more information, see http://www.diabetes.ca/about-diabetes/what/facts/.

A bit about me: I am pretty healthy. I started running a few years ago to help lose weight, and have since progressed to triathlons. I have considered exercise to be my "anti-aging" treatment. As a result, I feel great, and everyone says I look pretty good, too - I love when people can't believe I will be 50 next year! As a "warm-up" to Disneyworld, I am training for a half-marathon next month, and really enjoying it (surprised myself). So I am working on the physical preparation.

Now for the fundraising preparation. This is what is more daunting to my mind. But I know I can do it. I am now actively looking for donations. And what can you donate? Money of course - you can go directly to the website: http://www.diabetes.ca/get-involved/supporting-us/donate-online/ and donate in my name. Or you can give me money:). I am also planning a pub night with a silent auction. So I am looking for donations of silent auction items or door prizes. You can even receive a tax receipt for items donated! And I'm also looking for fun people to come enjoy the pub night! Call me if you would like to help in any way:
780-456-3934

I hope this wasn't too long-winded, but I wanted to explain why I'm doing what I'm doing.
